What is Mercury Retrograde?

A planetary retrograde is the 'apparent' backward movement of a planet through the sky. A planet in retrograde does not physically start going backwards, in fact this is an optical illusion based on the relative position of the planets as they move around the Sun. All planetary bodies in our solar system go into retrograde, with the exception of the Sun and the Moon.

The Phases of Mercury Retrograde

During 2022, Mercury goes retrograde 4 times. Each retrograde cycle has three phases.

Phase 1 - Pre-Shadow
This is the pre-shadow phase, when Mercury is slowing down and preparing for its retrograde motion. Start to tune into the energy and prepare for a period of reflective learning.

Phase 2 - Retrograde
During the retrograde phase, you are being asked to notice the challenges, successes, signs and guidance around you. Mercury will show you where you need to place your focus during the implementation phase.

Phase 3 - Post Shadow
Now is the time to take what you have learned and make the changes needed to improve your life.
